Interview with FIONA GOMES, Founder of Yakety Yak language cafe

"I love travelling and seeing new places and cultures but Edinburgh will always be the place I come back to".

How did you come up with the idea of setting up a business about languages?

I like languages and had a basic knowledge of a couple of languages but never used them.  I thought it would be nice to use them - maybe just to be able to chat in another language, perhaps over a coffee, but I did not know of a way of doing that.  So the idea of Yakety Yak started!

I did not know if there would be anyone else in Edinburgh interested in a coffee and a chat in a foreign language, but the only way to find out was to try it.  And now, 2 years later, there are lots of interesting, friendly, witty people who meet up every week for chats in 8 different languages.

How the Yakety Yak system works?

We have set times and places for our conversation sessions in cafes around Edinburgh and anyone who has some knowledge of the language can drop in and join us.  We generally have at least 2 groups of different abilities at each session, so you join the group which is the best for you. Each group has a tutor who is a native speaker of the language to make sure you improve, and to ensure there is no temptation to lapse into English because you don’t know a word!

Why do you think YY has become very popular in just two years?

We are flexible - you do not have to sign up for a 10 week course with us, you just pop in when you can, so you only pay for the times you come, but also because we have fun. We chat about anything and everything, so coming to YY becomes part of your social life, relaxing with friends over a coffee, and improving your language at the same time.

Have people in the UK got good skills for learning a foreign language?

Yes. We have a reputation for not learning other languages but I have been very impressed with the number of people who speak 1 or more languages very well.  However I think if we started learning foreign languages much younger than we currently do we would find it a lot easier and less of a chore.

What is the most popular language in the YY sessions?

French is the most popular language, and also the language with the most advanced groups. I think this is because in Britain French used to be the 2^nd language taught in most schools so most of us have some French tucked away in our brains somewhere, we just have to find it.  Spanish is a close 2^nd to French in popularity.

In your opinion, why have most of the customers remained regulars?

I think there are 2 reasons; our fantastic tutors, who are friendly, patient, encouraging and enthusiastic and our customers, who are interesting, sociable and full of great chat.

What is your favorite place in town?

Looking at the Castle from Princes Street on a cold winter’s day at sunset.

What is the best place to get lost in the city?

The Botanics, the Royal Mile, the Meadows – there are so many places to wander around and discover new nooks and crannies.

What do you like the most about this city?

Edinburgh is big enough to have plenty to do and see throughout the year, but there are also quiet, unspoilt places such as the Pentland Hills just on our doorstep. 

What would you change?

When I am cycling, I would flatten some of the hills in Edinburgh, but generally there is not much I would change.  (Apart from maybe ban the tramworks!)

How would you describe Edinburgh in just one word/sentence?

Home!  I love travelling and seeing new places and cultures but Edinburgh will always be the place I come back to.

¿Cómo surgió la idea de montar un negocio basado en hablar idiomas?

Me gustan los idiomas y tenía conocimientos básicos sobre un par de ellos, pero nunca los usaba. Pensé que sería bueno utilizarlos, quizás hablando mientras se toma un café, pero no sabía cómo hacerlo. De este modo empezó la idea de Yakety Yak. Al principio ignoraba si habría alguien más en Edimburgo interesado en tomar un café mientras se hablaba en otro idioma y la única manera de averiguarlo era intentándolo. Y ahora, dos años después, hay muchas personas interesantes, muy agradables e ingeniosas, que se encuentran cada semana para charlar en ocho idiomas diferentes.

¿Cómo funciona el sistema de Yakety Yak?

Hemos establecido una serie de horas y lugares para nuestras sesiones de conversación en diferentes cafés de la ciudad y cualquier persona que tenga un cierto conocimiento del idioma puede unirse en cualquier momento. Generalmente, tenemos al menos dos grupos de diferentes niveles en cada sesión, para que la gente se pueda unir al grupo que mejor se ajuste a sus características. Cada grupo tiene un profesor nativo para asegurar que los clientes mejoran y para no caer en la tentación de hablar en inglés sólo por el hecho de no saber una palabra.

¿Por qué piensas que Yakety Yak se ha hecho tan popular en sólo dos años de vida?

Somos flexibles. Para participar en las conversaciones no es necesario apuntarse a un curso de 10 semanas con nosotros, sólo vienes cuando puedes y se paga por las veces que has venido. Pero también creo que es porque nos divertimos. Charlamos sobre todo tipo de temas. Para muchos clientes nuestros, YY se ha convertido en parte de su vida social, algo que sirve para relajarse con amigos tomando un café a la vez que se mejora un idioma.

¿La gente del Reino Unido tiene buenas aptitudes para aprender un idioma extranjero?

Sí. Tenemos fama de que no aprendemos ningún otro idioma pero me ha sorprendido el número de personas que hablan muy bien uno o más lenguas extranjeras.

¿Cuál es el idioma que goza de más popularidad en las sesiones de Yakety Yak?

El francés es el idioma más popular y también el que más grupos de nivel avanzado tiene. Esto creo que es debido a que en Gran Bretaña el francés era el idioma extranjero que se solía enseñar en las escuelas. De este modo, la mayoría de nosotros tiene el lo en la recámara, escondido en alguna parte de nuestro cerebro, sólo tenemos que encontrarlo. El español le sigue de cerca.

Según tu opinión, ¿Por qué la mayoría de los clientes son regulares?

Creo que por dos razones: Por nuestros fantásticos profesores que son simpáticos, pacientes, que animan y son entusiastas y por nuestros clientes, que son personas muy interesantes, muy sociales y con la capacidad de generar magníficas conversaciones.

Hablando de Edimburgo ¿Cuál es tu lugar favorito de la ciudad?

Princes Street, mirando hacía el castillo al atardecer en uno de esos fríos días de invierno.

¿Cuál es el mejor sitio para perderse?

Los Jardines Botánicos, la Royal Mile, Los Meadows… Hay muchos lugares para pasear y descubrir nuevos rincones.

¿Qué es lo que más te gusta de esta ciudad?

Edimbrgo es lo suficientemente grande como para tener muchas cosas para hacer y ver durante todo el año, pero también hay lugares tranquilos y con gran belleza natural como las Pentland Hills.

¿Qué cambiarías?

Cuando voy en bici, allanaría varias de las colinas y cuestas de Edimburgo, pero por lo general no cambaría nada (aparte de, quizás, prohibir las obras del tranvía)

¿Cómo describirías Edimburgo en sólo una palabra?

Casa! Me encanta viajar y conocer nuevos lugares y culturas pero Edimburgo siempre será el lugar al que vuelva.

All seasons in one

When people ask me what I like and dislike from Scotland my answer is short: I like everything but the weather. In my opinion, Edinburgh is one of the best cities in the world and would be perfect if the weather was warmer. I like living a winter with snow and a real warm summer, but it seems that in this country, there is a unique cold and long season. However, sometimes the four seasons can be experienced in just one day. Weather changes so fast and this is the reason why the forecast in TV is updated every few hours. These two photos are a clear example of that. Both of them have been taken this weekend; On Saturday it was very foggy and wet and today we all woke up an hour later (as a result of the Summer time) but with a clear and warm day. I hope this is just the first of many days like this one.

It is very nice to start feeling the spring. (Scottish people don´t mind though, as they wear same type of clothes along the year)

Cuando la gente me pregunta qué es lo que me gusta de Escocia y lo que no, mi respuesta suele ser corta: Me gusta todo menos el tiempo. En mi opinión, Edimburgo es una de las mejores ciudades del mundo y sería perfecta, si hiciera un clima más cálido. Me gusta vivir un invierno con nieve y un verano con caluroso, pero en este país, parece que sólo existe una única estación a lo largo de todo el año. Sin embargo, a veces ocurre que las cuatro estaciones se dan de golpe en un solo día. El clima cambia muy rápidamente, por ello la información meteorológica se va actualizando por horas. Estas dos fotos que ilustran la entrada son un claro ejemplo de lo que hablo. Ambas han sido tomadas este fin de semana. El sábado hizo un día húmedo y con mucha niebla pero hoy hemos despertado una hora más tarde (producto del horario de verano) con un día claro y cálido. Espero que éste sea sólo el primero de muchos días así.

Y es que es bueno comenzar a sentir la primavera, aunque a los escoceses no parezca importarles ya que visten igual todo el año...

The Protagonists

Today is a remarkable day in my diary which is the reason I am writing this post. Once again I talk about time - to remember that, 6 years ago, on 28^th February 2006, I arrived in Edinburgh for the first time. This blog brings together these memories from the last two and a half years and, in nearly all of the posts, all the images have shown this city, as a backdrop to this experience.

However, this time, I would like to pay tribute to those who have been and still are part of my life in Edinburgh. Today, they are the protagonists. It is said that where you live becomes your place because of the people around you. That is the reason why I consider Edinburgh my second home.

These people who appear in the collage have helped me to live in this city with loads of energy and illusion, just exactly as the first day. If you enlarge the image you will be able to see hundreds of unforgettable moments. Of course these moments are not all of them and possibly, some people won´t appear but it becomes very difficult to make a selection from almost 300 folders and more than 16,000 photos taken in all those years! And I´m sure many more will come…

Hoy es un día especial, como especial también es esta entrada. Una vez más hago mención al tiempo para recordar que, hace hoy 6 años, el 28 de febrero de 2006, llegué por primera vez a Edimburgo. Este blog lleva recogiendo parte de todos esos recuerdos desde hace poco más de dos años y medio, y casi todas las entradas que aquí aparecen, van unidas a imágenes que muestran esta ciudad como telón de fondo de esta experiencia.

Pero hoy, quiero rendir homenaje a todas aquellas personas que han sido y siguen siendo parte de mi vida en Edimburgo. Hoy, ellos son los protagonistas. Dicen que el lugar que consideras tu casa lo hacen las personas que hay a tu alrededor y esta es la razón fundamental por la que considero esta ciudad como mi segundo hogar. Todas las personas que aparecen en este collage me han ayudado a vivir Edimburgo con la misma energía e ilusión del primer día. Si se agranda la imagen se pueden apreciar cientos de momentos inolvidables. Por supuesto que éstos no son todos los momentos aquí vividos. Posiblemente incluso haya gente que no aparezca pero resulta difícil hacer una selección que refleje tantos buenos instantes entre las casi 300 carpetas que contienen más de 16.000 fotos hechas en todo este tiempo. Y estoy seguro que habrá muchas más…
